How do we make our sailing trips sustainable?

We have been heavily involved in the topic of sustainable tourism since the company was founded. Carl, our founder, is particularly passionate about this topic. He is a father of two and wants to show his children the world as untouched and beautiful as he can experience it. He also stands behind this conviction in his private life and has long since swapped the family car for a bike, which he uses to get to work every day in all weathers. For us, sustainable water tourism means combining unforgettable experiences on the water with active environmental protection. The tourism sector is one of the largest industries in the world - and with it comes great responsibility. Plastic pollution, especially on beaches and bays, not only affects the attractiveness of destinations, but also the entire ecosystem. This becomes apparent time and again on our trips. How can you also be sustainable on our sailing trips?

With strong partners and big goals

The topic of sustainability was a major motivator right from the start. It was therefore also clear that the topic of sustainability would be implemented at sailwithus. Basically, sailing on a yacht with a skipper is very resource-efficient thanks to the use of wind power. Since 2020, we have been a member of the Forum anders Reisen e.V., an umbrella organization for sustainability in tourism for German-speaking countries. The association is committed to sustainable tourism and supports tour operators in organizing and carrying out their trips in an environmentally conscious manner.

In active exchange with stakeholders in the target region

However, it is not only the environment that is important to us, but also the local people. The restaurants, leisure activities, shopping facilities and hotels we recommend are run by local owners and sell regional products. In this way, we support the local economy and partners with long-term cooperation and regular exchange.

One hand washes the other

It is precisely this exchange that allows us to distance ourselves from mass tourism and share many insider tips with you as fellow sailors that are not in any travel guide. We are convinced that tourism of this kind is beneficial. Not only for your experience as a sailing vacation, but also for a fair relationship with the locals. In this way, a familiar and friendly relationship with the local people can be ensured. Nature and wildlife will thank us for it. Naturally, we take great care to respect the natural protected areas where marine and coastal life nest and settle.

Reaching the goal together with awareness

We also try to make our customers aware of the wide range of sustainable options available to them. For example, for practical reasons, water and electricity must always be saved on the yachts whenever possible. You can also find more information about everyday sailing on board in our sailing vacation FAQs.

As some of the waste water from showers is discharged directly into the sea, we always recommend bringing microplastic-free shampoos and soaps with you and provide some of these on our cruises in cooperation with our partner Benecos.

Our mission: to reduce plastic

We are part of the International Tourism Plastic Pledge initiative and are joining forces with strong partners to campaign for a plastic-free tourism industry!

The tourism sector is one of the largest industries in the world and this also brings with it a great responsibility. Plastic pollution, especially on beaches and bays, has a negative impact on the attractiveness of tourist destinations. We see this time and again on our trips.

It is estimated that there will be more plastic than fish in the sea by 2050. That is why we have recognized the urgency and are bringing our commitment to life with the Green Ahoy – Plastic Cruise to express our commitment. Here, the skipper and the entire yacht dedicate a week to saving the world's oceans. Every day, we work together to free our beloved beaches from plastic.

Setting goals together

The goals of the International Tourism Plastic Pledge, which we actively support and have taken up the cause of, are:

  • raising awareness of this issue in the industry itself, as well as in the destinations and among our customers
  • Take measures such as reuse and recycling
  • Exchange of knowledge

We believe that every plastic item on the trip that we & you replace with an alternative makes a big contribution and that the more environmentally friendly replacement products we suggest reduce the impact. By raising awareness of the issue, we want to support you before, during and after the trip!

Together for the future

Preserving the purity of the sea is one of the most important factors for sailwithus as a tour operator. Protecting our most popular destination goes without saying, but we go beyond that and consider not only our cruise, but also all accompanying aspects such as travel and booking.

To counteract climate change and reduce our footprint, we work with atmosfair to offset the CO² emissions from our trips.
